Project Case Study
FORTIFIED Roof Replacement — Old Metairie, LA
How we replaced a 20-year-old roof on a 2,400 sq ft colonial revival home with a FORTIFIED certified system — delivering hurricane protection and a 28% insurance discount.
Project Background
The homeowner contacted us after noticing granule loss and a persistent leak near the chimney flashing on their colonial revival home in Old Metairie. The existing three-tab shingle roof was over 20 years old — well past its expected lifespan in Louisiana's subtropical climate. With hurricane season approaching, they wanted a roof that would actually protect their home, not just cover it.
After our initial inspection, we recommended a full roof replacement with FORTIFIED Roof™ certification. Since they were replacing the roof anyway, upgrading to FORTIFIED added only about 8% to the total cost — but qualified them for significant insurance savings under Louisiana law.
The homeowner had heard about the FORTIFIED program from a neighbor who had received insurance discounts after certification. They wanted to understand exactly what FORTIFIED required and whether it was worth the additional investment. After reviewing the costs and projected savings, the decision was straightforward.
Why FORTIFIED Was Chosen
Old Metairie sits in one of the highest hurricane-risk zones in Southeast Louisiana. The neighborhood's mature tree canopy and proximity to Lake Pontchartrain make it particularly vulnerable to wind-driven rain and flying debris during storms. A standard shingle roof replacement would have addressed the immediate issues, but FORTIFIED certification provides verified storm resistance that standard installations simply don't offer.
- Hurricane-rated protection verified by an independent IBHS evaluator — not just a contractor's word
- Louisiana-mandated insurance discounts of 15-40% on wind coverage
- Sealed roof deck that prevents water intrusion even if shingles blow off
- Enhanced roof-to-wall connections with hurricane straps at every truss
- Reinforced drip edge and hip/ridge shingles to resist wind uplift at vulnerable points
Installation Process
Our crew completed the FORTIFIED roof installation in 3 working days, followed by IBHS evaluator verification the following week. Here's how the project unfolded:
Day 1 — Tear-Off & Sealed Deck
Removed existing three-tab shingles and inspected the roof deck. Found two sections of soft OSB near the chimney — these were replaced before we could proceed. Applied self-adhering ice and water shield membrane across the entire deck per FORTIFIED specifications. This sealed deck is the single most important FORTIFIED requirement — it creates a waterproof barrier that protects the home even if shingles are lost during a storm. The IBHS evaluator inspected and photographed the sealed deck before we moved to the next phase.
Day 2 — Underlayment, Edge Metal & Shingles
Installed synthetic underlayment over the sealed deck, followed by FORTIFIED-specified enhanced drip edge along all eaves and rakes. Our crew then began laying GAF Timberline HDZ architectural shingles rated for 130 mph winds, using ring-shank nails at 4-inch spacing per FORTIFIED fastening patterns. Hurricane straps were verified at every truss-to-wall connection in the attic.
Day 3 — Ridge, Cleanup & Documentation
Installed reinforced hip and ridge cap shingles with additional sealant, secured attic ventilation against wind-driven rain, and completed all remaining detail work. Our crew performed final cleanup including magnetic nail sweep. We photographed every stage of the installation for both our records and the IBHS evaluation file.
Week 2 — Third-Party Evaluation
An independent IBHS-certified evaluator inspected the completed roof against FORTIFIED Roof™ requirements. The evaluation covers sealed deck membrane, enhanced edge metal, fastening patterns, roof-to-wall connections, hip/ridge reinforcement, and attic ventilation protection. Our installation passed on the first inspection.
Materials Used
Every material on a FORTIFIED project must meet specific performance standards. Here's what we installed on this Metairie home:
Shingles
GAF Timberline HDZ (130 mph rated, Class 4 impact)
Sealed Deck
Self-adhering ice & water shield membrane — full deck coverage
Underlayment
Synthetic felt over sealed deck membrane
Edge Metal
FORTIFIED-rated enhanced drip edge, mechanically fastened
Fasteners
Ring-shank nails, 4" spacing per FORTIFIED pattern
Hip/Ridge
GAF Seal-A-Ridge with enhanced adhesive
Ventilation
Ridge vent with wind-driven rain baffles
Connections
Simpson Strong-Tie hurricane straps at every truss
Certification & Insurance Outcome
The IBHS evaluator confirmed FORTIFIED Roof™ compliance on the first inspection. The homeowner received their official FORTIFIED certificate within 10 days and immediately contacted their insurer. The result: a 28% reduction in wind insurance premiums — saving approximately $1,800 per year on a home valued at $420,000.
At that savings rate, the additional cost of FORTIFIED certification (approximately $4,200 over a standard replacement) pays for itself in roughly 2.3 years. The certification remains valid for 5 years, meaning the homeowner will save an estimated $9,000 over the certification period — net of the upgrade cost.
Beyond insurance savings, the homeowner now has independently verified hurricane protection that standard roof replacements don't provide. The FORTIFIED designation also transfers with the home, adding documented value for future buyers in Metairie's competitive real estate market.
Lessons for Homeowners
If you're replacing your roof in Metairie, New Orleans, Kenner, or anywhere in Southeast Louisiana, FORTIFIED certification is the single highest-value upgrade you can make. The marginal cost over a standard replacement is modest — typically 8-15% — but the combination of insurance savings, verified storm protection, and increased home value makes it one of the best investments available to Louisiana homeowners.
The key is working with a licensed contractor experienced with FORTIFIED installations. FORTIFIED requires coordination with independent evaluators at multiple stages — a contractor who doesn't understand the process can cause delays and rework. As a licensed general contractor, Cajun Home Services handles the entire process from tear-off to certification.

Roofing Services Connected to This Project
FORTIFIED certification is one piece of a broader roofing program we run for Metairie and Jefferson Parish homeowners. If this project is relevant to your situation, the pages below explain the specific services, materials, and program details involved — useful whether you're comparing systems, verifying contractor credentials, or planning the work that surrounds a roof replacement.
- Learn more about our FORTIFIED roofing contractor services — the full installation scope, IBHS evaluator coordination, and insurance-discount paperwork we handle on every certified project.
- For background on the standard itself, read our FORTIFIED program guide covering Roof, Silver, and Gold designations, Louisiana grant eligibility, and the engineering behind each requirement.
- Compare materials and warranties on our main roofing services hub, or look at the underlying systems we install — architectural shingle roofing and standing seam metal roofing can both be configured to meet FORTIFIED standards.
- When tear-off uncovers rot or termite damage in the decking or framing (common in older Metairie homes), our structural repair services let us correct it without subcontracting the work to another trade. If the roof plane is out of true because the house itself has moved, our licensed foundation repair services address the cause before the new roof goes back on.
- If you're filing a claim after a hurricane or hail event, our storm-damage roof repair team documents losses, coordinates with adjusters, and rebuilds to FORTIFIED specs where it makes financial sense.
How We Manage a Project Like This
FORTIFIED projects require tight coordination — sealed deck inspections, third-party evaluations, and documented fastening patterns all have to line up. Our project management process walks through how we schedule each phase, communicate daily, and keep job sites clean. Homeowners hiring a roofer for the first time should also review our Louisiana license and insurance documentation (LA License #889646) before signing a contract with anyone — FORTIFIED rebates require a properly licensed installer.
Serving Metairie, New Orleans, Kenner, and all of Southeast Louisiana as a licensed, insured general contractor.
